Ryan Jones At Dead Creek
3 half days on the water fishing 2 otter creek tributaries. Headed down to Danby for the TU Northeast Rendevous, a camping trip for college fly fishing clubs in the northeast. Was a ton of fun, visited the American Fly Fishing Museum did a tree planting, and got to fish a private stock pond. Fishing the tributaries, all of the trout I landed were on nymphs. The first tributary was clear and low water, which meant I needed a longer leader and to have a stealth approach from below the pools. I caught the two browns on small nymphs towards the end of the day, once I figured the fish out. The second day, I tried euro nymphing with my 5 wt line, which did not work out. I forgot my euro reel at home, and tried to make do, but I could not feel fish take my jig fly. I lost/missed 10 fish because I couldn't feel the take. I increased my leader and added a sighter tippet, but it did not help. I did end up landing a fallfish on the streamer. Again towards the end of the day, I switched to the nymphs and an indicator where I landed 2 brook trout, colored up for fall. After this, I headed to the stock pond with some of the other clubs, where we caught a ton of bows. I caught 2 12" fish, but the biggest was 24" and probably pushing 8 lbs, which I had the pleasure of doing a perfect net job. The last day, I headed back to the first tributary and tried streamer fishing with longer tippet, yet had no luck. I found a massivd hole, where I saw a 14-16" fish towards the back of the hole. I tried sneaking around to the front, when I saw a very large shape dart under a boulder from the deepest point in the run. I suspect it was a very nice brown. I will be back with nymphs and an indicator.
