It’s been a crappie fall. I remember spending weeks in early summer trying to find my first crappie. I would spend hours trying every jighead variant, wake up at the crack of dawn to try to find that perfect window, tried worms, minnows, plastics and all sorts of spinners. It would kill me as a bank fisherman to see boaters fishing massive schools all year while I struggled with a 20 minute dawn window. Lots of helpful anglers on this app gave me great tips, and I’ve listed a few that I’ve picked up as well. 1. Fish sunset, not sunrise. Seriously who wants to wake up at the crack of dawn for a tiny window to catch fish. I find the window for crappie a little longer at sunset anyways. 2. Fish tea coloured stained dark water. These crappie love hiding in dark water. A lot of times they will hang quite close to the bank, even as you fish on top of them. 3. Use simple baits. Bobber+worm+jighead catches them just as good as the million crappie baits you can buy. Trout spinners work great too. 4. Be ready for the hookset. These guys bite light, so be ready for those little indications on your line/bobber. A lot of the bites look like tiny bluegill. Go catch some crappie!!
