Upper Bushman Lake

Finally made it back to Upper Bushman — one of the most unique lakes in SE Michigan. A combination of undeveloped shoreline, wetlands, limited access and protected natural setting make it feel like a remote northern lake. It’s also designated as C&R only which means it supports an unusually strong population of largemouth, pike and bluegill. Be warned, the pike are voracious and will quickly drain your tackle box if you go without a leader. The only downside is it’s extremely difficult to launch a kayak as you have to portage nearly a 1/4 mile from the parking lot down to the dock… and then haul it all back uphill. The parking lot is also fenced with a narrow, staggered entrance to the path which means you have to lift your yak over - twice!. It’s basically set up to keep you out. But, the results speak for themselves if you’ve got the desire to fish it. 👊

Another great recco from a fellow angler! Upper Bushman Lake. What a gem! But, there are some things to note before you fish it. It is physically demanding to launch a yak… at least for a guy my age. 😆 There is no launch accessible by vehicle that I am aware of. I had to park and haul my yak a 1/4 mile down to the dock. I couldn’t even imagine hauling a Jon boat down to it. It’s a well-defined, gravel meandering path but there are two uphill portions that nearly ☠️ me. And, of course you have to haul everything back. Also, this is a DNR-mandated C&R lake for all species, which means there are some big boys patrolling this one. I’ll be sore tomorrow but it was worth it and I’ll be back. Tight lines!
