Made the most of a quick after-work trip. Started with the reliable whacky until the sun started setting, switched to a shallow running crankbait on the drop-offs just outside of the water park (a productive technique on this lake) and finally top-water as darkness rolled in and the bigger fish started moving around. Tight lines. 👊

Slow rolling a spinner bait vs. burning it just under the surface can be quite effective in the summer. Find the drop offs or any type of vegetation that has a defined edge, make a long cast and let it start to sink. Then slowly retrieve it letting it bounce and deflect off the bottom as you raise and lower your rod, similar to a swim jig. They will almost always hit it on the drop because the blades flutter and dance as it drops. A trailer hook is mandatory to ensure you get them on a short strike. Impossible for active fish to resist. 👊

Lake 16 is a tough little body of water to fish. It has a ton of open shoreline and not a lot of mature trees to buffer the wind so it’s a challenge to keep the yak on point. The water is also crystal clear so you have to be stealth and make long casts. If you can see them, they can see you! Got ‘em on the drop-offs with a Rapala crank bait running at 6-feet. 👊
