Vancampens Brook

Headed out to the DWG to fish a creek that I haven't touched in a bit. Specifically went to Van Campens Brook to find wild bows and it did not dissapoint. After not being able to land one in Cali, I wanted to see some pretty patterns. It was a bit of a multi species day which was kind of surprising. 4 species, 5 bows, 1 brown, 3 creek chub, and a blacknose dace. I thought I might run into a brook trout but they were probably further up in skinnier water. They all took size 16 p-tails and walt's worms. I hiked in about a mile to the upper fall before I started fishing. Most of my trout came from the falls section, in the deep plunge pools of the upper falls and the pools right above. The creek chubs and the dace came from much slower, less oxygenated water. I explored further up than I have before, but the creek became tight, and the constant plunge pools turned into very scattered, flat riffles that I didn't feel like fishing. If I pushed even further up, I probably could've found more holes, but it was overgrown and about noon, so I called it. This was my last outing in NJ before heading back up to VT. I have no classes on Fridays during the fall semester, which I am going to take full advantage of. Whether it's a 3 day weekend trip or just an extra day of fishing, the extra day off is going to be very nice. And when I do get up there, I am going to start right where I left off in the spring.

Caught one small brown and 2 common shiners on Sunday. We went to Van Campens Glen, and didn't see any large fish. The only thing we did see though was people swimming in the best holes. There was a park ranger that kept patrolling the trails kicking people out of the water, which was nice to see.

Caught these 2 trout, as well as these 2 creek chub on powerbait worms Saturday. I was only able to fish a few pools but I saw plenty of nice sized fish. Don't have my new waders yet, but they should be coming in today. Hopefully I can get out towards the gap again soon.
